I must admit, when I saw this was the blog Carma had chosen I thought, not another one that I have to reminisce for. Well, forget that...this one is fun!!
1. Mushroom hunting with Uncle Tom
When I grew up my family lived on a large farm out in the woods. My Uncle Tom, who lived in Indianapolis, would come and stay with us during the seasons for deer hunting and mushrooms. My favorite was mushroom season! Every year he would take me out in the woods for hours, just me, he never took my sister or my cousins. I loved that, all the attention was mine! And, he listened to everything I had to say. Aunt Janet always said that I was the apple of his eye.
2. Angel Falls and the Cabin
Growing up, my family was poor. We had everything we needed, but when it came to toys my sister and I didn't have many of the things that other kids did. Don't get me wrong, we were very happy and our imaginations were probably better than most of the other kids that we knew. We didn't have a playhouse, we had a tree where the roots were growing all sorts of weird that we called Angel Falls. We played up there day in and day out. When we would wake up in the morning, we would eat and get dressed and tell mom, "We're going to Angel Falls." On the other side of the woods around our house was what we called "the cabin". The cabin was three tress that made the shape of a large triangle that we would pretend was...well, a cabin. Kristin and I would play house and take turns on which one lived at Angel Falls and the Cabin. We had more good times up there than we could ever remember.
3. Browndog
Browndog was my best friend. When I was 6 months old, my dad brought home two puppies. They were both males and they were brothers, one was white and the other was brown, Browndog and Whitedog. I don't remember Whitedog, but I had Browndog until I was 13 and in the eighth grade. I was devastated when he died.
4. Barbies
Kristin and I LOVED our Barbies. Our great-grandma made all of the clothes for our barbies. Whatever we wanted: wedding dresses, tux, prom dresses, jeans, underwear, sweatshirts, bathing suits...she made all of them. The clothes that Booe-Booe made were much nicer and way cooler than the ones our friends were buying at the store. We still have most of the clothes and dolls; They are stored in Rubbermaid boxes in my mom's basement, sometimes Kristin and I dig them out just to remember all of the fun we used to have with them.
5. VBS at Yeddo Baptist Church
For one week every summer our little church in Yeddo would have a Vacation Bible School. I can remember having different themes like Australia and Abrodginies, and a space theme. We would make crafts and have snacks and get to play games with other kids from the surrounding neighborhoods.
6. My Sandbox
My dad made my brother and sister and I a sandbox using a HUGE old tire from a tractor. He drove one of the tractors down the road, (isn't the rural Midwest great!), to a creek and dug up sand to fill it with. I can remember the sand smelled fishy and there were really small shells in it that my sister and I would always dig out. Sometimes we would even make it up to look like a beach and play with our babries in there!
7. Garth Brooks and Billy Ray!!
When I was younger, both of these guys did a televised concert, which my mom taped. My sister and I would watch them over and over again. Everytime we did, we would get really wound up and jump off of the furniture...(much like I did with NSync's televised concert on the Disney Channel when I was in high school!!). Can you believe that mullet and "achy Breaky Heat" were so cool?!?
