I am not a big movie buff, nor do I ever spend any time blogging about movies, whether I like them or not. I have never gushed over The Departed or bitched about Tom Hanks, and I never planned to use any space on my blog to do so. However, my mind was changed in the first scene of The Dark Knight.
WOW. That is all I can manage to say about it. I have never walked out of a movie theater and felt that my expectations for the movie had been exceeded. We rarely even go to the theater to see a movie because both Jake and myself hate feeling as if we wasted we wasted the money on it when we could just wait for it to be playing On Demand on our cable. I would pay to see this movie again and again.
On Heath Ledger's performance:
I have always been a fan of Heath Ledger since I was in high school and used to rent 10 Things I Hate About You over and over again. I have always thought of him as a good actor, but I never necessarily considered him brilliant. Until now.
Director Nolan was quoted as saying, "I'm excited to continue the story we started with Batman Begins. Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale’s Batman is going to be incredible.”
And that is exactly what it was. I found myself actually wondering if this was indeed the same actor that I have watched in 10 Things I Hate About You, A Knight's Tale, Brokeback Mountain, The Patriot... Words cannot describe how truly amazing his performance in this film was. Jake made the comment on the way home from the movie that had he not died, his acting career would have probably gone down the tubes pretty quick, because there is just no way that he could out-do what he did in The Dark Knight. I don't know that I necessarily agree with that, but it was arguably the best role he had ever played.
