It's A Man's World

So, I have been working for a few years now, and all of the places I have worked are predominatly a man's territory. I have always been treated decently and have never really had any problems with any male coworkers. So, when I took my current job in a more professional setting, I expected to be treated like a man...(not to brag or anything, but I work harder than all of them put together in this office).

There is a guy in my office who has a habit of coming and going as he pleases. He's one of those smooth operator type sales people and not really friendly. He's got a bad habit of trying to undercut the other sales people in the office and even lying to the customers. Here's the kicker...he's buddies with the boss!! This guy who lies to customers and cheats his coworkers and doesn't put in nearly the same amout of time that the rest of us do, and the boss likes him. He's good at getting customers to put down a deposit, but often times they fall through when people start to realize that the process is not quite the way that my coworker promises.

This coworker of mine took 7 deposits last week, one each day. He now feels that he should recieve some sort of preferential treatment from the rest of us. Today it was busy in the office, the weather is nice and we have an awesome promotion going on right now, and guess who decides to leave at 11:30 and not come back...yep, the same guy who lies to people.

As the day progresses we find out that he's trying to steal a deal from someone in the office, a deal that has pretty well finished (the salesman has been paid and the delivery date has been scheduled). My boss and I were chatting while eating our lunches and he made a comment about the hours that the subject in question keeps. I simply responded by saying that since I sold 2 houses today maybe it was time that I started coming and going as I please. (Let me take this time to add that I work all of my scheduled days, I don't leave early unless it was previously okayed, I schedule appointments and keep them, I work my days off if I have an appointment, and I don't smoke on the non-smoking property. I was sick 1 weekend and missed a Saturday while I was at Redi-Med and my boss chewed my ass for it!). My boss then has the gall to tell me that when I sell 7 houses in a week he might consider it.

WHAT THE CRAP IS THAT????? Am I doing something wrong? Does this have anything to do with the fact that I am a 23-year old woman working in an office with men who are 43+? What is going on, seriously?!? I am so close to finding a new job that I find it difficult to get out of bed most mornings. I start everyday wondering what kind of crap I will have to listen to from my superior and my coworkers. I am not a feminist, and I am fairly consertive or traditional when it comes to women's rights or whatever, but this is freaking ridiculus!!! I work hard and I deserve better than this. Right...

"Feminism is the radical idea that women are people too."
